Endesa Main Offices Huelva
Huelva, Spain
Offices
Project Description:
The project stems from the developer's need to construct a new office building, Endesa's Provincial Headquarters in Huelva, which is being built as an extension to the existing offices, resulting in a single, perfectly integrated and connected volume.
The intervention therefore focuses on the comprehensive renovation and refurbishment of the existing building and the construction and connection of the new two-story structure, the latter being the volume that characterizes Endesa's new landmark in the province with its geometry, double skin with hexagonal openings, and large overhangs.
The new building is located in the southern part of the plot (Cristóbal Colón Thermal Power Plant), next to the main road of the Port of Huelva and overlooking the mouth of the Odiel River. It is rotated 18º with respect to the existing volume and is connected to it on the ground floor, creating a single open-plan work space. The main entrance, vertical communication hub, and emergency staircase exit are located in this connecting area.
Given these location constraints, the new building will have south, east, and west-facing facades, with the climatic implications that these orientations have in the south of the peninsula, leading to high energy demand in summer and spring. This demand will be reduced thanks to the passive architectural measures adopted, thanks to the design of a double skin for solar protection and care taken with the envelope, with double glazing, insulation, etc.
The double facade will also reduce the interior temperature on the first floor, which features a cantilevered gallery, and on the ground floor, thanks to the shadows cast by the cantilever. In winter, this facade and cantilever are designed and calculated to allow sunlight to enter, providing optimal lighting and temperature conditions.
