CIEMAT Laboratories

Project Description:
The CIEMAT 3 Laboratory underwent a comprehensive renovation that combined a technical overhaul of its interior spaces with a radical transformation of its exterior image. The project was approached as an opportunity to redefine the building's role within the campus, giving it a powerful visual identity and renewed functionality.
On the exterior, a bold, dynamic design full of movement was chosen. The new envelope breaks with the rigidity of traditional academic language, introducing angular geometries, irregular rhythms, and contemporary materials that create a vibrant and recognizable presence. This formal strategy makes the building a landmark on campus, reflecting the innovative nature of the scientific research it houses.
Inside, the renovation focused on updating the laboratories and technical spaces, incorporating new facilities, air conditioning systems, specialized lighting, and high-resistance finishes. The spaces were reorganized to improve operational efficiency, safety, and flexibility of use, adapting to the demands of the research and teaching teams.
The intervention also included collaborative work areas, rest areas, and clear pathways that encourage circulation and interaction among users. The result is a building that combines a provocative exterior image with a precise, functional interior structure that is fully adapted to contemporary scientific needs.
