Museum of Democratic Memory

Madrid, Spain

Museum

Project Description:

The democratic museum Jardín de la Memoria is located in a historic building in Madrid, designed in 1860, which has served various purposes over time, reflecting the city's urban and cultural memory. Located on the corner of Argumosa and Hospital Streets, it currently serves as the Archive of the Performing Arts and Music Documentation Center.

The proposed architectural intervention respects its partial protection under the Madrid General Plan, allowing for a 20% expansion above ground level. The rear nave is gutted to incorporate a new contemporary volume that harmoniously integrates with the original structure without altering its essence. In addition, a recessed basement is added for temporary exhibitions, connected by vertical cores.

The proposal transcends the functional, addressing an urban and symbolic dimension: healing and beautifying the surrounding voids, integrating party walls and forgotten spaces as an active part of the project. It is conceived as a poetic intervention that reinforces the identity of the site and its historical continuity.
